I get LOTS of questions about lighting, do we really need it? Isn’t it an unnecessary expense if we have candles? The answer is you ABSOLUTELY need lighting. If you have gorgeous centerpieces that no one can see, there is absolutely no point! Candles make a simple soft glow from the bottom, and pretty much leave the flowers dark. All you see is the candles.

That said, you don’t have to go crazy with lighting at all. Pinspots on the arrangements are a minimum, but some other things that really add a lovely touch are uplights around the room in a soft color, and a wash of color on the ceiling is always nice. And some do a leaf pattern on the ceiling or dance floor- looks so elegant! If you look at my next post, they did a pink color wash on the ceiling of the Ellis Island Museum- really made a big difference!

When the amazing ladies at Always a Bridesmaid asked us to do an Indian Wedding at Ellis Island for almost 400 people, we flipped! The colors were so lush and gorgeous, the venue- well, it’s Ellis Island! Amazing. They had a traditional Hindu decorator do the ceremony florals, but we got to do the reception venue. Royal reds, hot pinks, fuschia- a dream! Robert Wagner took the photos, he did an incredible job.

I had a wonderful time working with this family. The wedding was at Bridgewaters, and I worked mostly with the lovely mom of the bride, but they were all so fabulous and I miss them already! They wanted organic gardens, in their words, simple and elegant. Right up my alley.

The chuppah was made of birch wrapped with wisteria vines, and filled with beautiful flowers. The centerpieces were in concrete planters, which made for a lovely weathered look. and the palate fit so nicely in the space. If you haven’t been to Bridgewaters- you must, the view is spectacular! Yesterday, I did a photo shoot with the incredibly talented photographer, Karen Mordechai. She has an exquisite eye for details and colors, absolutely amazing. She also told me about this really wonderful thing that she is doing- Sunday Suppers. Basically, she has a guest chef in her amazing loft who teaches a group of people to cook supper. Then you eat it all together. How awesome is that? Below is a photo she took of pickled fennel slaw that they made (who knew slaw could be so beautiful??!)

Time Out New York (Oct 1 issue) did a nice wedding guide, and fleurs was included. Some other vendors that I noticed that I am a huge fan of were Melangerie with their adorable Save the Date postcards, and the Waffles and Dinges truck! I probably need less of those, but how cute would it be to have this truck outside your wedding in the summer for the after party! And of course, the Doughnut Plant (LOVE their lavender donuts made with fresh organic lavender), instead of a cake.

I really enjoyed after this shoot- I went to City Hall and gave the bouquet to a bride. That was really fun!

Check it out! Anja from The Knot did a segment onwedding trends for the fall. They featured a bouquet by Fleurs in purple and silver. Other vendors featured were Gail Watson Cakes, and Paper and Cup stationery. Also, something interesting was Adorn Brides jewelry rental- get all the diamonds, just for the evening, and fedex them back when the night is over.

The wonderful ladies at Brides Magazine have chosen Fleurs to do a 2 page spread on which flowers are essential for your wedding. It is on newsstands now, the Fall 09 issue. Check out Brides NY (and the other cities, too)- our flowers are also on the cover!

Here is a wedding fleurs did at Studio 450.The incredibly artistic photos were taken by Lina Jang. Of course, the amazing ladies at Always a Bridesmaid were the fabulous planners. I love the choice of colors in this all white space- and using the mirrors on the tables added so much glamor. Also, to keep costs down, the flowers were- wait a minute, the C word- Carnations! In deep fuschia tones. What do you think?
